Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has succeeded in producing a tire made of 90% sustainable materials. This tire will be available after obtaining the approval of the Ministry of Transport (DOT). 12 months after the 70% sustainable tire was first introduced at CES 2022, Goodyear improved this ratio by another 20% at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
While Goodyear is one step closer to making a 100% sustainable tire, it has also managed to keep the rolling resistance of the tire even lower in the demo model, compared to a regular tire made of conventional materials. The lower rolling resistance contributes to a reduction in fuel consumption, although an estimate is not given.
Although the tire is DOT approved, it is not yet ready for production. According to Goodyear, it needs to solve supply problems to determine the scale needed for high-volume production.
Goodyear’s show tire contains 17 components from 12 different natural materials. Instead of making a more traditional tire, Goodyear chose to make a renewable tire.
