Perth Heat, one of Australia’s popular baseball teams, now pays its players with Bitcoin.
The players of Perth Heat, Australia’s most successful baseball team, are now paid in Bitcoin. This made the club the first professional sports club worldwide to make such a move. Payments will be processed on the Lightning Network, a “Layer 2” payment protocol on top of the main chain with the help of the OpenNode platform.
As part of the partnership, staff salaries will also be made with the largest cryptocurrency. On top of that, Bitcoin will also be accepted for products and on-site meals. To underline its commitment to the biggest cryptocurrency, Heat plans to keep it on its balance sheet.
Patrick O’Sullivan, the club’s newly appointed Bitcoin Chief Executive, says this is not a “one-time thing” as an inflation hedge:
Founded in 1989, the Perth Heat managed to win 15 Claxton Shield trophies.
