Collins, one of the world’s most established dictionaries, chose NFT as the word of the year.
The dictionary, which was founded in 1824 and has recorded more than 4.5 billion words, identified NFT as the most important word of 2021 in a blog post published on Wednesday. He described NFTs as the crossroads between the internet and money and said, “This is definitely a buzzword we’ve heard over and over in the last 12 months in breathtaking news and social media.” In addition to NFT, metaverse and crypto words were also featured as other words of the year.
As it is known, NFTs had a huge breakout this year. Since the first months of 2021, the transaction volume has gradually increased and in August it broke a record by exceeding $ 1 billion.
These numbers have attracted many art businesses. Sotheby’s, one of the most famous and well-established auction houses in the world, has auctioned a large number of NFTs this year. It even launched its own NFT platform, called Metaverse, last month. Many names, such as Katy Perry, Paris Hilton, The Weeknd, Rob Gronkowski and Simone Biles, joined the craze. Christie’s, another well-established auction house, has partnered with leading NFT marketplace OpenSea to hold NFT auctions.
