Spanish MP Maria Munoz expressed her desire to make Spain a Bitcoin mining center during the protests that negatively affected Bitcoin (BTC) mining operations in Kazakhstan.
Due to the events in Kazakhstan, the global hash rate decreased by 14%. The leading crypto has dropped to $ 40,600 on the Bitstamp exchange today.
Munoz put questions to the government, demanding a written response. The Spanish lawmaker asked if the government is aware of the impact the drop in the global hash rate has had on the crypto industry in Spain and plans to attract miners who may have to leave Kazakhstan.
Finally, the MP briefed the government on how energy efficient the Bitcoin mining industry is.
Last year, the idea to create a national cryptocurrency strategy was put forward by the Citizens Party. Thus, with the rise of the crypto sector, it was aimed to make the sector safer for investors. However, the government has not yet considered this proposal.
Ernest Urtasun, a member of the European Parliament, reacted to Munoz and stated that he thought the initiative was a “bad joke” because of the damage Bitcoin causes to the environment.
