Calvin Becerra lost three Bored Ape NFTs worth nearly $1 million to scammers who contacted him via chat on Discord.
Saying that the three monkeys that are part of the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection are worth about $1 million, Becerra bought one of the monkeys two weeks ago for 65 ETH, about $300,000 at current market prices. According to the record of his transactions on OpenSea, he spent a total of 185 ETH, $854,000 on the three pieces.
Some commentators said that what happened to Becerra was not hacking, Becerra was just deceived.
Trying to save her expensive monkeys, Becerra wrote an NFT note to the thieves;
“Please, let’s make a deal. Better than nothing. ”
The scammers ignored his requests and responded by offering NFTs for sale on the platform.
Becerra sought help from the NFT community;
“Gentlemen, if you can help me remove the offers from these stolen monkeys and boycott the sale, it might cause them to lower the price so I can at least get my monkey back for cheaper. I don’t know what else to do here. ”
The collector even called the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to report the theft.
“Officer, they stole my monkeys!” One Twitter user mocked Becerra, saying;
“If you gave someone your username, password and that money was stolen, do you think the FBI would come to their aid?”
Help has finally arrived. OpenSea, Rarible and NFT Trader have banned the sale of stolen monkeys on their platforms. On November 3, Bacerra retrieved one of his monkeys and thanked the scammers for helping him retrieve the NFTs safely.
Becerra warned NFT collectors, saying;
“Watch out for Discord account names that match moderator names and full Discord ID numbers. Do not reply to DMs or click any links. They stole monkeys over a million dollars from me. ”
