The crypto community celebrates the day the first Bitcoin block, called the Genesis block, was mined on January 3, 2009.
Today, the first block of Bitcoin, also called the Genesis block, was mined. Bitcoin’s birthday was and continues to be celebrated by prominent figures in the crypto community.
On January 3, 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of Bitcoin, published the Genesis block containing the first 50 Bitcoins on Sourceforge. He also left the block with a quote from a headline from the Times of England:
The concept behind Bitcoin emerged after the 2008 financial crisis, which they blamed on banks. Satoshi was not a fan of the modern banking system. He chose to create a more community-oriented digital currency and wanted to eliminate banks and dark middlemen, whom he saw as corrupt and untrustworthy.
13 years after the first block was released, Bitcoin is still going strong with a market cap of almost $900 billion. Bitcoin also became the fastest asset/institution to reach a market cap of $1 trillion. Now it is in a position to be held by billionaires, banks, celebrities, governments and corporations and even declared the official currency by governments.
