According to the Korea Times, Lee Jae-myung will agree to contribute to the election campaign with cryptocurrency. The presidential candidate will also be the world’s first presidential candidate to publish an NFT
Lee’s supporters interested in cryptocurrency will be able to start contributing to the campaign this month. According to the news, all donated cryptocurrencies will be cashed out with the help of a local exchange. The politician’s cryptocurrency fundraising plan also includes NFTs. Donors to Lee’s campaign will receive an NFT with a photo of the candidate alongside campaign promises. This makes the former governor of Gyunggi province the first presidential candidate in history to post an NFT.
The cryptocurrency plan is part of Lee’s effort to impress young voters. According to a survey published in November, 40.5% of respondents aged 20 to 40 said they have invested in cryptocurrencies.
The presidential candidate last month said while giving a lecture at Seoul National University that he wants South Korea to lead the global cryptocurrency scene, calling crypto an “undeniable fact.” Lee also promised to increase the deduction limits while supporting the postponement of taxation of cryptocurrencies to next year.
The most recent primary election poll, released on January 1, is 4% compared to Yoon Suk-yeol, the candidate of Lee’s conservative People’s Power Party. It shows that he is ahead by 6 percent. His election is scheduled for March 9, 2022.
