CHP Adıyaman Deputy Abdurrahman Tutdere shared his report titled “Being a Child in Turkey”.
Tutdere said, “According to the research conducted by the Council of Europe, Turkey is the third country with the highest child poverty rate” and that children who grow up in poverty are deprived of their right to education. Tutdere stated that the dropout rate of children condemned to poverty is higher.
According to the report prepared by Tutdere, 1 million 738 thousand students in Turkey have left the formal education system and are studying in open education. 1 million 201 thousand children have no registration at school.
616 child workers lost their lives in 10 years
According to the data published by TURKSTAT, the number of children aged 5-17 working in economic activity is 720 thousand. In the last ten years, at least 616 child workers, 300 of whom are under the age of 15, have died while working.

Poverty seriously affects children’s health. According to the Hunger Map published by the United Nations World Food Program, 14.8 million people across Turkey are undernourished, 1.7 percent of children under the age of 5 are acutely malnourished, and 6 percent are chronically malnourished.
The province with the highest rate of malnutrition is Şırnak.
According to the research carried out within the scope of the Project for Monitoring the Growth of School-Age Children in Turkey, carried out by the Ministry of Health throughout Turkey, children living in Eastern Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia Regions cannot thrive due to chronic hunger.
One in three children is poor
According to the report published by the Council of Europe Committee on Health and Sustainable Development, Turkey is one of the four countries concerned about child poverty.
In terms of child poverty, it is the second country with the highest poverty rate with 22.4 percent among 41 OECD member countries.
